In 2004, The Colton Group was founded as a strategic advisory firm with the slogan “Pathfinders for Growth”. The company name and slogan pays homage to Joseph Hutchins Colton. Known professionally as J.H. Colton, he founded an American mapmaking company which became an international leader in the map publishing industry between 1831 and 1890.

J.H. Colton not only grew his own entrepreneurial business, but helped in the growth of the country by publishing maps for the westward expansion of the United States along with maps for the States, regions, and later, countries. The Colton firm dominated American map publishing and their atlases were the finest produced in the U.S. during the 19th century.

The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, both in the accuracy of its maps and the production qualities of its work. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engravings which was the most common method used at the time. Colton’s maps were especially admired for their wide decorative borders.
